Meanwhile Joab fought against Rabbah of the Ammonites and captured the royal citadel.


What the wicked dread will overtake them; what the righteous desire will be granted.


No-one will be able to stand against you. The Lord your God, as he promised you, will put the terror and fear of you on the whole land, wherever you go.


This very day I will begin to put the terror and fear of you on all the nations under heaven. They will hear reports of you and will tremble and be in anguish because of you.’


Then all the peoples on earth will see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they will fear you.


but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.


It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.


They said to Joshua, ‘The Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands; all the people are melting in fear because of us.’


They answered Joshua, ‘Your servants were clearly told how the Lord your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you the whole land and to wipe out all its inhabitants from before you. So we feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we did this.


However, when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,


Then David said to Achish, ‘If I have found favour in your eyes, let a place be assigned to me in one of the country towns, that I may live there. Why should your servant live in the royal city with you?’
