Your relatives, members of your own family – even they have betrayed you; they have raised a loud cry against you. Do not trust them, though they speak well of you.
While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him.
When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, ‘He is out of his mind.’
Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him.
Now Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd.
Someone told him, ‘Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.’
On hearing it, many of his disciples said, ‘This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?’
From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.
However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly, but in secret.
No-one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.’
Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: ‘Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.
When Eliab, David’s eldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked, ‘Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle.’
