Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe.


Then the Lord said to him, ‘Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and ill-treated there.


Now the famine was still severe in the land.


You shall live in the region of Goshen and be near me – you, your children and grandchildren, your flocks and herds, and all you have.


you should answer, “Your servants have tended livestock from our boyhood on, just as our fathers did.” Then you will be allowed to settle in the region of Goshen, for all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians.’


Pharaoh said to Joseph, ‘Your father and your brothers have come to you,


Then Israel entered Egypt; Jacob resided as a foreigner in the land of Ham.


For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘At first my people went down to Egypt to live; lately, Assyria has oppressed them.


‘Then a famine struck all Egypt and Canaan, bringing great suffering, and our ancestors could not find food.


God spoke to him in this way: “For four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and ill-treated.


Then you shall declare before the Lord your God: ‘My father was a wandering Aramean, and he went down into Egypt with a few people and lived there and became a great nation, powerful and numerous.
