The crowds answered, ‘This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.’


After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, ‘Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.’


When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, ‘Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.


The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, ‘What is this? A new teaching – and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.’


He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, ‘We have never seen anything like this!’


They replied, ‘Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.’ [The earliest manuscripts and many other ancient witnesses do not have John 7:53–8:11. A few manuscripts include these verses, wholly or in part, after John 7:36, John 21:25, Luke 21:38 or Luke 24:53.]


‘Men of Galilee,’ they said, ‘why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.’


Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, ‘What does this mean?’


Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?


they recognised him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.
