But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying:


At the king’s command they removed from the quarry large blocks of high-grade stone to provide a foundation of dressed stone for the temple.


‘As for this temple you are building, if you follow my decrees, observe my laws and keep all my commands and obey them, I will fulfil through you the promise I gave to David your father.


‘Go and tell my servant David, “This is what the Lord says: you are not the one to build me a house to dwell in.


But God said to me, “You are not to build a house for my Name, because you are a warrior and have shed blood.”


To humans belong the plans of the heart, but from the Lord comes the proper answer of the tongue.


This is what the Lord says: ‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Where is the house you will build for me? Where will my resting-place be?
