And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first washed before dinner.

The Pharisee noticed and was astonished [to see] that Jesus did not first wash before dinner.

When the Pharisee saw that Jesus didn’t ritually purify his hands by washing before the meal, he was astonished.

But the Pharisee began to say, thinking within himself: "Why might it be that he has not washed before eating?"
