There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:

NOW THERE was a certain man among the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler (a leader, an authority) among the Jews,

Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:

There was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a Jewish leader.

And when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,

Jesus answered and said to him, Are you the teacher of Israel and do not know these things?

But lo, he speaks publicly, and they say nothing to him. Perhaps the rulers truly know that this is the Christ indeed?
