The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests that were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin:
Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:
and said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.
And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?
In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judæa,
Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets.
And they answered, John the Baptist: but some say, Elias; and others, One of the prophets.
and of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.
And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.
And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.
They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.
