And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth–re´hob, and the Syrians of Zobah, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Ma´acah a thousand men, and of Ishtob twelve thousand men.


And thy handmaid had two sons, and they two strove together in the field, and there was none to part them, but the one smote the other, and slew him.


then they came to Gil´e-ad, and to the land of Tahtim–hod´shi; and they came to Dan–ja´an, and about to Zidon,


Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.


lest he tear my soul like a lion, rending it in pieces, while there is none to deliver.


And he said, Thou shalt no more rejoice, O thou oppressed virgin, daughter of Zidon: arise, pass over to Chittim; there also shalt thou have no rest.


Be thou ashamed, O Zidon: for the sea hath spoken, even the strength of the sea, saying, I travail not, nor bring forth children, neither do I nourish up young men, nor bring up virgins.


So they went up, and searched the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, as men come to Hamath.


And the Lord delivered them into the hand of Israel, who smote them, and chased them unto great Zidon, and unto Mis´rephoth–ma´im, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they smote them, until they left them none remaining.


and Hebron, and Rehob, and Hammon, and Kanah, even unto great Zidon;


In those days there was no king in Israel: and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in; for unto that day all their inheritance had not fallen unto them among the tribes of Israel.


And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born unto Israel: howbeit the name of the city was La´ish at the first.


Then the five men departed, and came to La´ish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt careless, after the manner of the Zido´ni-ans, quiet and secure; and there was no magistrate in the land, that might put them to shame in any thing; and they were far from the Zido´ni-ans, and had no business with any man.
