And it came to pass, when king Hezeki´ah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the Lord.


And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the book of the law, that he rent his clothes.


because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled thyself before the Lord, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the Lord.


Then Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, Hilki´ah the priest hath given me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king.


And the king commanded Hilki´ah, and Ahi´kam the son of Shaphan, and Abdon the son of Micah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asai´ah a servant of the king's, saying,


And Nehemi´ah, which is the Tirsha´tha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the Lord your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.


and rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.


Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.


For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.


And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the Lord until the eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.
