because that they have forsaken me, and have worshipped Ash´toreth the goddess of the Zido´ni-ans, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Milcom the god of the children of Ammon, and have not walked in my ways, to do that which is right in mine eyes, and to keep my statutes and my judgments, as did David his father.


For Solomon went after Ash´toreth the goddess of the Zido´ni-ans, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.


and so return unto thee with all their heart, and with all their soul, in the land of their enemies, which led them away captive, and pray unto thee toward their land, which thou gavest unto their fathers, the city which thou hast chosen, and the house which I have built for thy name:


Moreover the altar that was at Beth–el, and the high place which Jerobo´am the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, had made, both that altar and the high place he brake down, and burned the high place, and stamped it small to powder, and burned the grove.

And they forsook the Lord, and served Ba´al and Ash´toreth.


And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the Lord with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ash´toreth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the Lord, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.


And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto the Lord.
