As the LORD commanded Moshe, so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.


Moshe and El`azar the Kohen spoke with them in the plains of Mo'av by the Yarden at Yericho, saying,


Those who were numbered of them were twenty-three thousand, every male from a month old and upward: for they were not numbered among the children of Yisra'el, because there was no inheritance given them among the children of Yisra'el.


But among these there was not a man of them who were numbered by Moshe and Aharon the Kohen, who numbered the children of Yisra'el in the wilderness of Sinai.


For the children of Yisra'el walked forty years in the wilderness, until all the nation, even the men of war who came forth out of Egypt, were consumed, because they didn't listen to the voice of the LORD: to whom the LORD swore that he wouldn't let them see the land which the LORD swore to their fathers that he would give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.
