Esav said to Ya`akov, *Please feed me with that same red stew, for I am famished.* Therefore his name was called Edom.


Esav said, *Behold, I am about to die. What good is the birthright to me?*


He said, *Isn't he rightly named Ya`akov? For he has supplanted me these two times. He took away my birthright. See, now he has taken away my blessing.* He said, *Haven't you reserved a blessing for me?*


He said, *Your name will no longer be called Ya`akov, but Yisra'el; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed.*


The sons of Re'uven the firstborn of Yisra'el (for he was the firstborn; but, because he defiled his father's couch, his birthright was given to the sons of Yosef the son of Yisra'el; and the genealogy is not to be reckoned after the birthright.


For Yehudah prevailed above his brothers, and of him came the prince; but the birthright was Yosef's:)


then it shall be, in the day that he causes his sons to inherit that which he has, that he may not make the son of the beloved the firstborn before the son of the hated, who is the firstborn:


but he shall acknowledge the firstborn, the son of the hated, by giving him a double portion of all that he has; for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.


lest there be any sexually immoral person, or profane person, as Esav, who sold his birthright for one meal.
