And the people complained in the hearing of the Lord about their misfortunes, and when the Lord heard it, his anger was kindled, and the fire of the Lord burned among them and consumed some outlying parts of the camp.
And all the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness!
But truly, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord,
shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it.
When Moses told these words to all the people of Israel, the people mourned greatly.

‘Not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land that I swore to give to your fathers,
And the time from our leaving Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the brook Zered was thirty-eight years, until the entire generation, that is, the men of war, had perished from the camp, as the Lord had sworn to them.
For indeed the hand of the Lord was against them, to destroy them from the camp, until they had perished.
And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?
