who shall go out before them and come in before them, who shall lead them out and bring them in, that the congregation of the Lord may not be as sheep that have no shepherd.”


For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come.


A long time afterward, when the Lord had given rest to Israel from all their surrounding enemies, and Joshua was old and well advanced in years,


Joshua summoned all Israel, its elders and heads, its judges and officers, and said to them, “I am now old and well advanced in years.


since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me.


Now Eli was very old, and he kept hearing all that his sons were doing to all Israel, and how they lay with the women who were serving at the entrance to the tent of meeting.


Why then do you scorn my sacrifices and my offerings that I commanded for my dwelling, and honor your sons above me by fattening yourselves on the choicest parts of every offering of my people Israel?’


And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears.”


And I declare to him that I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them.


But Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son.” And he said, “Here I am.”


When Samuel became old, he made his sons judges over Israel.


that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.”


Yet his sons did not walk in his ways but turned aside after gain. They took bribes and perverted justice.


and said to him, “Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.”
