And it came to pass at the return of the year, at the time when kings go forth to war, that David sent Joab and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they spoiled the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabba: but David remained in Jerusalem.


And Joab fought against Rabbath of the children of Ammon, and laid close siege to the royal city.


And when they had passed the Jordan, they came to Aroer to the right side of the city, which is in the vale of Gad.


And the chief of the Hebronites was Jeria, according to their families and kindreds. In the fortieth year of the reign of David they were numbered; and there were found most valiant men in Jazer Galaad,


Hesebon also with its suburbs, and Jazer with its suburbs.


For the suburbs of Hesebon are desolate, and the lords of the nations have destroyed the vineyard of Sabama: the branches thereof have reached even to Jazer: they have wandered in the wilderness; the branches thereof are left; they are gone over the sea.


The cities of Aroer shall be left for flocks: and they shall rest there, and there shall be none to make them afraid.


O vineyard of Sabama, I will weep for thee with the mourning of Jazer: thy branches are gone over the sea. They are come even to the sea of Jazer: the robber hath rushed in upon thy harvest and thy vintage.


Thou shalt make a way that the sword may come to Rabbath of the children of Ammon and to Juda, unto Jerusalem the strong city.


And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabba: and it shall devour the houses thereof with shouting in the day of battle, and with a whirlwind in the day of trouble.


And Moses sent some to take a view of Jazer. And they took the villages of it, and conquered the inhabitants.


And Etroth, and Sophan, and Jazer, and Jegbaa,


And when thou comest nigh the frontiers of the children of Ammon, take heed thou fight not against them, nor once move to battle. For I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon, because I have given it to the children of Lot for a possession.

So all the cities of the Levites within the possession of the children of Israel were forty-eight,


Galaad rested beyond the Jordan, and Dan applied himself to ships. Aser dwelt on the sea-shore, and abode in the havens.
