Even when they had cast an image of a calf for themselves and said, ‘This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt,’ and had committed great blasphemies,


When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered around Aaron and said to him, “Come, make gods for us, who shall go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.”


Then the Lord sent a plague on the people, because they made the calf—the one that Aaron had made.


At that time they made a calf, offered a sacrifice to the idol, and reveled in the works of their hands.


Do not become idolaters as some of them did, as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and they rose up to play.”


For I was afraid that the anger that the Lord bore against you was so fierce that he would destroy you. But the Lord listened to me that time also.


Then I took the sinful thing you had made, the calf, and burned it with fire and crushed it, grinding it thoroughly, until it was reduced to dust, and I threw the dust into the stream that runs down the mountain.


“Even at Horeb you provoked the Lord to wrath, and the Lord was so angry with you that he was ready to destroy you.
