Upon my bed at night I sought him whom my soul loves; I sought him but found him not; I called him, but he gave no answer.


I was sleeping, but my heart was awake. The sound of my beloved knocking! “Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my perfect one, for my head is wet with dew, my locks with the drops of the night.”


I had put off my garment; how could I put it on again? I had bathed my feet; how could I soil them?


For there is still a vision for the appointed time; it speaks of the end and does not lie. If it seems to tarry, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay.


But if that wicked slave says to himself, ‘My master is delayed,’


After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them.


but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps.


But at midnight there was a shout, ‘Look! Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’


Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “So, could you not stay awake with me one hour?


Again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.


Meanwhile the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering at his delay in the sanctuary.


But if that slave says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the other slaves, men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk,


I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to them. And yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”


He began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and leased it to tenants and went away for a long time.


Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is already the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers;


for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Sleeper, awake! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”


Discipline yourselves; keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour.
