and the Lord sent Nathan to David. He came to him and said to him, “There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor.


Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that you have in mind, for the Lord is with you.”


“Go and tell my servant David: Thus says the Lord: Are you the one to build me a house to live in?


‘Since the day that I brought my people Israel out of Egypt, I have not chosen a city from any of the tribes of Israel in which to build a house, that my name might be there, nor did I choose anyone to be a ruler over my people Israel. But I have chosen Jerusalem in order that my name may be there, and I have chosen David to be over my people Israel.’


But that same night the word of God came to Nathan, saying,


Surely the Lord God does nothing without revealing his secret to his servants the prophets.


And he said, “Hear my words: When there are prophets among you, I the Lord make myself known to them in visions; I speak to them in dreams.
