Jeremiah 17 - Easy To Read Version

“The sins of the people of Judah\par are written down in a place where they can’t be erased.\par Those sins were cut into stone\par with an iron pen.\par Their sins were cut into stone\par with a diamond tipped pen. {\cf2\super [134]} \par And that stone is their heart.\par Those sins were cut\par into the horns of their altars. {\cf2\super [135]} \par

Their children remember the altars\par that were dedicated to false gods.\par They remember the wooden poles\par that were dedicated to Asherah. {\cf2\super [136]} \par They remember those things\par under the green trees and on the hills.\par

They remember those things\par on the mountains in the open country.\par The people of Judah have many treasures.\par I will give those things to other people.\par People will destroy all the high places {\cf2\super [137]} \par in your country.\par You worshiped at those places.\par And that was a sin.\par

You will lose the land I gave you.\par I will let your enemies take you\par to be their slaves.\par Why? Because I am very angry.\par My anger is like a hot fire,\par and you will be burned forever.”\par

The Lord says these things:\par “Bad things will happen to people\par that trust only other people.\par Bad things will happen to people\par that depend on other people for strength.\par Why? Because those people have stopped\par trusting the Lord.\par

Those people are like a bush in a desert.\par That bush is in a land where no people live.\par That bush is in a hot and dry land.\par That bush is in a bad soil.\par That bush does not know\par about the good things that God can give.\par

But the person that trusts in the Lord\par will be blessed.\par Why? Because the Lord will show him\par that the Lord can be trusted.\par

That person will be strong\par like a tree planted near water.\par That tree has large roots that find the water.\par That tree is not afraid\par when the days are hot.\par Its leaves are always green.\par It does not worry in a year\par when no rain comes.\par That tree always produces fruit.\par

“A person’s mind is very tricky!\par The mind can be very sick,\par and no person truly understands it.\par

But I am the Lord,\par and I can look into a person’s heart.\par I can test a person’s mind.\par I can decide what each person should have.\par I can give each person the right payment\par for the things he does.\par

Sometimes a bird will hatch an egg\par that it did not lay.\par A person that cheats to get money\par is like that bird.\par When that man’s life is half finished,\par he will lose the money.\par At the end of his life, it will be clear\par that he was a foolish person.”\par

From the very beginning, our temple {\cf2\super [138]} \par has been a glorious throne for God.\par It is a very important place.\par

Lord, you are the hope of Israel.\par Lord, you are like a spring of living water.\par If a person quits following the Lord,\par then his life will be very short. {\cf2\super [139]} \par

Lord, if you heal me,\par I truly will be healed.\par Save me,\par and I truly will be saved.\par Lord, I praise you!\par

The people of Judah continue to ask me questions.\par They say,\par “Jeremiah, what about the message from the Lord?\par Let’s see that message come true.”\par

Lord, I did not run away from you.\par I followed you.\par I became the shepherd {\cf2\super [140]} you wanted.\par I did not want the terrible day to come.\par Lord, you know the things I said.\par You see all that is happening.\par

Lord, don’t ruin me.\par I depend on you in times of trouble.\par

People are hurting me.\par Make those people ashamed.\par But don’t disappoint me.\par Let those people be scared.\par But don’t scare me.\par Bring the terrible day of disaster\par to my enemies.\par Break them.\par And break them again.\par

The Lord said these things to me: “Jeremiah, go and stand at the People’s Gate, {\cf2\super [141]} where the kings of Judah go in and out. \{Tell the people my message, and then\} go to all the other gates of Jerusalem and do the same things.”

Say to those people: “Listen to the message of the Lord. Listen, kings of Judah. Listen, all you people of Judah. All you people that come through these gates into Jerusalem, listen to me!

The Lord says these things: Be careful that you don’t carry a load on the Sabbath {\cf2\super [142]} day. And don’t bring a load through the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day.

Don’t bring a load out of your houses on the Sabbath day. Don’t do any work on that day. You must make the Sabbath day a holy day. I gave this same command to your ancestors. {\cf2\super [143]}

But your ancestors did not obey me. They did not pay attention to me. Your ancestors were very stubborn. I punished them, but it did not do any good. They did not listen to me.

But you must be careful to obey me.” This message is from the Lord. “You must not bring a load through the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath. You must make the Sabbath day a holy day. You will do this by not doing any work on that day.

“If you obey this command, then kings that sit on David’s throne will come through the gates of Jerusalem. Those kings will come riding on chariots {\cf2\super [144]} and on horses. The leaders of the people of Judah and Jerusalem will be with those kings. And Jerusalem will have people living in it forever!

People will come to Jerusalem from the towns of Judah. People will come to Jerusalem from the little villages that are around it. People will come from the land where the family group of Benjamin lives. {\cf2\super [145]} People will come from the western foothills and from the hill country. And people will come from the Negev. {\cf2\super [146]} All those people will bring burnt offerings, sacrifices, grains offerings, incense, {\cf2\super [147]} and thank offerings. They will bring those offerings and sacrifices to the temple of the Lord.

“But if you don’t listen to me and obey me, then bad things will happen. If you carry loads into Jerusalem on the Sabbath {\cf2\super [148]} day, then you are not keeping it a holy day. So I will start a fire that can’t be put out. That fire will start at the gates of Jerusalem, and it will burn until it burns even the palaces. {\cf2\super [149]} ”
