Isaiah 40 - Easy To Read Version

Your God says,\par “Comfort, comfort my people!\par

Speak kindly to Jerusalem!\par Tell Jerusalem,\par ‘Your time of service is finished.\par You have paid the price for your sins.’”\par The Lord punished Jerusalem—\par twice for every sin she did.\par

Listen, there is a person shouting!\par “Prepare a way in the desert for the Lord!\par Make the road in the desert level\par for our God!\par

Fill every valley.\par Make every mountain and hill flat.\par Make the crooked roads straight.\par Make the rough ground smooth.\par

Then, the Glory of the Lord {\cf2\super [373]} \par will be revealed (shown).\par And together, all people\par will see the Lord’s Glory.\par Yes, the Lord himself said these things!”\par

A voice said,\par “Speak!”\par So the man said,\par “What should I say?”\par The voice said,\par “People \{don't live forever;\par they\} are all like grass.\par Their goodness is like a wildflower.\par

A powerful wind from the Lord\par blows on the grass,\par and the grass dies\par and the wildflower falls.”\par

Grass dies and wildflowers fall.\par But the word of our God continues forever.”\par

Zion, {\cf2\super [374]} you have good news to tell.\par Go up on a high mountain\par and shout the good news!\par Jerusalem, you have good news to tell.\par Don’t be afraid, speak loudly!\par

The Lord my Master\par is coming with power.\par He will use his power to rule all the people.\par The Lord will bring rewards for his people.\par He will have their payment with him.\par

The Lord will lead his people\par like a shepherd leads sheep.\par The Lord will use his arm (power)\par and gather his sheep together.\par The Lord will pick up the little sheep\par and hold them in his arms.\par Their mothers will walk beside him.\par

Who measured the oceans\par in the palm of his hand?\par Who used his hand to measure the sky?\par Who used a bowl to measure all the dust\par of the earth?\par Who used measuring scales to measure\par the mountains and hills?\par \{It was the Lord!\}\par

No person told the Lord’s Spirit\par what he should do.\par No person told the Lord\par how to do the things he did.\par

Did the Lord ask for any person’s help?\par Did any person teach the Lord to be fair?\par Did any person teach the Lord knowledge?\par Did any person teach the Lord to be wise?\par \{No! The Lord already knew these things\}.\par

Look, all the nations in the world are like\par one small drop in the bucket.\par If the Lord took all the faraway nations,\par and put them on his weighing scales,\par they would be like small pieces of dust.\par

\{All the trees in\} Lebanon are not enough\par to burn for the Lord.\par And all the animals in Lebanon\par are not enough to kill \{for a sacrifice\}.\par

Compared to God,\par all the nations of the world are nothing.\par Compared to God,\par all the nations are worth nothing at all.\par

Can you compare God to anything? No!\par Can you make a picture of God? No!\par

But some people make statues\par from rock or wood,\par and they call them gods.\par One worker makes a statue.\par Then another worker covers it with gold\par and makes silver chains for it.\par

And for the base,\par he chooses a special kind of wood,\par a kind of wood that will not rot.\par Then he finds a good wood worker.\par And the worker makes a “god”\par that won’t fall over.\par

Surely you know the truth, don’t you?\par Surely you have heard!\par Surely someone told you long ago!\par Surely you understand who made the earth!\par

\{The Lord is the true God!\}\par He sits above the circle of the earth,\par \{and compared to him\}\par people are like grasshoppers.\par He rolled open the skies\par like a piece of cloth.\par He stretched the skies\par like a tent to sit under.\par

He makes rulers not important.\par He makes the judges of this world\par completely worthless.\par

\{Those rulers are like plants\};\par they are planted in the ground,\par but before they can send their roots\par into the ground,\par God blows on the “plants,”\par and they become dead and dry,\par and the wind blows them away like straw.\par

The Holy One (God) says:\par “Can you compare me to anyone? No!\par No one is equal to me.\par

Look up to the skies.\par Who created all those stars?\par Who created all those ‘armies’\par \{in the sky\}?\par Who knows every star by name?\par \{The true God\} is very strong and powerful,\par so none of these stars is lost.”\par

People of Jacob, this is true!\par Israel, you should believe this!\par So why do you say:\par “The Lord can’t see the way I live.\par God will not find me and punish me.”\par

Surely you have heard and know\par that the Lord God is very wise.\par People can’t learn everything he knows.\par The Lord does not become tired\par and need to rest.\par The Lord made all the faraway places\par on earth.\par The Lord lives forever.\par

The Lord helps weak people to be strong.\par He causes the people without power to become powerful.\par

Young men become tired and need to rest.\par Even young boys stumble and fall.\par

But people that trust the Lord\par become strong again\par like eagles that grow new feathers.\par These people run without becoming weak.\par These people walk without becoming tired.\par
