φθόγγος, φθογγου, ὁ (φθέγγομαι, which see), a musical sound, whether vocal or instrumental (Wis. 19:17): 1 Corinthians 14:7; Romans 10:18, in this latter passive, Paul transfers what is said in Psalm 18:5 () to the voices of the preachers of the gospel. (Homer, Tragg., Xenophon, Plato, others.)
