SHEPHERD

Meaning

Jesus is the good shepherd.

Explication

Jesus protects and guides his stray sheep, and all those who are lost. His sheep know his voice and no one can snatch them out of his hand. Jesus is the good shepherd to those who believe in him just as the shepherds are for their flocks. A shepherd takes care of his flock day and night. He gathers his sheep in the fold at night to protect them. A fold was a small area of a field surrounded by a fence where sheep can be put for shelter for the night. Because of the lack of doors, the shepherd used to sleep at the entrance ready to defend his sheep from danger. He had a real concern and love to those who belonged to him. In chapter 10, Jesus illustrates the way the shepherd looks after his sheep, protecting them from time, thieves and prey animals. He love and protected them, and if it was necessary he put his life for them. Jesus is that loving and caring protector. In the book of Ezekiel, it is said that the Messiah would come as a real shepherd to take care of the people of God. It was a loving message about the Christ to come, the good shepherd. The book of John, chapter 10, it shows us how the thieves and the wolves come to destroy the sheep. But the good shepherd is there to save them. These verses say that even Satan comes to steal, to kill and to destroy the people of God (verse 10) Jesus is there to protect, love and save us from destruction, giving us eternal life. Jesus didn't come just to be a paid caretaker, but to be the one ( the only one) who was and is, fully engaged to us till his own death and resurrection. Jesus is the good shepherd and he gives his life for you and me.
