MESSIAH

Meaning

Jesus is the Messiah.

Explication

"Messiah" is an Hebrew word which means "Christ" in Greek. Both words mean "the anointed" (someone chosen by God to fulfill his plan and purpose). Messiah is the title given to Jesus in both New and Old Testament. As in Hebrew (mashiach) as in Greek (χριστος) that word means anointed. In biblical times kings, priests and prophets were anointed with a spiritual meaning. The anointing symbolized the consecration of the anointed to God to fulfil a particular function inside of the divine purposes. That is why prophets started to announce that this Messiah would be a character with unlimited power who will definitively establish peace and justice in the world (Isaiah 9:7; 11:4; Hosea 14:2-9; Amos 9:11-15). The prophet Isaiah emphasized that this Messiah was going to be different to what was expected and that would rather be "the suffering servant of God who instead of dominating is oppressed and distressed, and instead of taking revenge on his enemies, humbly accepts the unjust punishment they give him (Isaiah 53:1-9). However, to the prophet Jeremiah the Messiah has a priestly function, is a representative of God and also represents the people before God (Jeremiah 25: 5-6; 33:8,15-18). Finally, the prophet Zechariah shows the Messiah as , "the righteous one, savior and humble" (Zechariah 9:9). That is way the Old Testament's Messiah is the Savior of the people. when Jesus appeared on the scene started to be called the Messiah, that is the meaning that is given by the people: the savior of the world. he was aware of people's expectations, they were longing for his early release, however he didn't rule out that popular aspiration, but he wanted to go further, the absolute freedom. when Jesus read the prophet Isaiah he wanted to emphasized that all that have been said about him is true and that now he is going to fulfil all those things. In all his earthly ministry he gives evidence that he is indeed, the Anointed of the Lord.
