Meaning

Jesus is the shoot of the stump of David.

Explication

Jesus is the shoot of the stump of David and, paradoxically, is also the root. He is the grapevine on which we depend to gain nutrients and to have life. A seed's germ is almost invisible to the human eye, however, is the most important part. The life of a new plant is in it. In the Scriptures we find different expressions to refer to a germ or "shoot" to name the Messiah who was to come. He is "the branch of the Lord" (Isaiah 4:2), a "tender shoot" (Isaiah 53:2), the "righteous branch" (Jeremiah 23:5), "the man whose name is the branch" (Zechariah 6:12). This symbolic language typical of the prophets, express the humility of Christ and the fact that he resurrected. His humbleness: he was born in a poor family, the fragility of a child lying in a manger, living a life in anonymity, his approachment to the poorest and most despised people, and finally, his death on a cross between two criminals. His resurrection: comparing himself to a wheat seed, Jesus explained how he had to die on this earth, as the seed falls on the ground to carry fruits. The seed's germ is his life, but once on earth, represented by death, that seed disappears, leaving a new plant to be developed. This is a telling image about resurrection, life comes from death, a seed that dies produces many seeds. These seeds represent Christ's followers, who are the result of Jesus' death and resurrection.
