Bible commentaries

If you ask a group of people how God is, you will receive many different answers. Some will say that it is a force somewhere in the cosmos, while others will describe him as a type of benevolent grandfather who overlooks "small sins". Most of the time, the given description will reveal more about who speaks than about God. In fact, the true God could surprise you. When the heavenly Father reveals Himself in the Holy Scriptures, a word that is never used when referring to Him is the impersonal "it," which is used to refer to a thing. God is a person. In all references, it is given a name (Jehovah, Elohim, Lord), or is mentioned with a male pronoun (He). He has all the attributes of a person: intelligence to reason, emotions to feel and willingness to make decisions. From Genesis to Revelation, God shows these characteristics. The Bible also speaks of the immutability of God. Let us be clear on what this means: the nature and character of the Lord never change. He is always Spirit and his love remains constant. We can all be assured that the laws and principles of God will remain true, and that He will act exactly as He has promised. Although he does adjust his emotions to suit a situation, his complacency, anger and other feelings are nuances of his being, not new characteristics. God is eternal, has no beginning and no end. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. No one created him; God simply is. If we want to honor the Father, we must know Him as truly eternal and immutable.
