One of the scribes came and heard them debating. Recognizing that Jesus had answered them well, he asked him, “Which commandment is the greatest of all?”

Some of the scribes answered, “Teacher, you speak well.”


“Which ones?” he asked. Jesus said, “‘You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not give false testimony.


Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches humans to do the same, will be called least in the Empire of Heaven. But whoever keeps and teaches them will be called great in the Empire of Heaven.


But woe to y’all Pharisees! For y’all tithe mint and rue and every kind of herb, but y’all skip past justice and the love of God. Y’all should have done these things without neglecting the others.


“Woe to y’all, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For y’all give a tenth of mint, dill, and cumin. But y’all have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faith. Y’all should have done these things, without neglecting the others.


When they returned to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them, and scribes questioning them.
