Forsooth in his days Hiel of Bethel builded Jericho; in Abiram, his first son, he founded it, and in Segub, his last son, he setted [or set] the gates thereof, by the word of the Lord, which he had spoken in the hand of Joshua, the son of Nun.
Whether not all these peoples shall take a parable on him, and the speaking of dark sentences of him? And it shall be said, Woe to him that multiplieth things not his own; how long, and he aggregateth against himself thick clay?
In that time Joshua prayed heartily, and said, Cursed before the Lord be the man, that raiseth up and buildeth the city of Jericho! Lay he the founda-ments thereof in his first engendered son, and put he the gates thereof in the last of his free children.
