and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the old prophets had risen again.

They said, “Some say Yochanan the Immerser, some, Elijah, and others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

His disciples asked him, saying, “Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

But others said, “He is Elijah.” Others said, “He is a prophet, or like one of the prophets.”

They told him, “Yochanan the Immerser, and others say Elijah, but others, one of the prophets.”

They answered, “‘Yochanan the Immerser,’ but others say, ‘Elijah,’ and others, that one of the old prophets has risen again.”

They asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” He answered, “No.”
