Then Abner called to Joab, and said, “Shall the sword devour forever? Don’t you know that it will be bitterness in the latter end? How long will it be then, before you ask the people to return from following their brothers?”

Then David said to the messenger, “Tell Joab, ‘Don’t let this thing displease you, for the sword devours one as well as another. Make your battle stronger against the city, and overthrow it.’ Encourage him.”

Abner said to Joab, “Please let the young men arise and compete before us!” Joab said, “Let them arise!”

but if you refuse and rebel, you will be devoured with the sword; for the LORD’s mouth has spoken it.”

Destroyers have come on all the bare heights in the wilderness; for the sword of the LORD devours from the one end of the land even to the other end of the land. No flesh has peace.

“I have struck your children in vain. They received no correction. Your own sword has devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.

How long will I see the standard and hear the sound of the shofar?

For that day is of the Lord, GOD of Hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge himself of his adversaries. The sword will devour and be satiated, and will drink its fill of their blood; for the Lord, GOD of Hosts, has a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.
