and was xl. days tempted of the devil. And in those days ate he nothing: ¶ And when they were ended, he afterward hungered.

¶ In the morning as he returned into the city again, he hungered,

And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, at the last he was an hungered.

And the devil said unto him: if thou be the son of God, command this stone that he be bread.

and there was Iacob's well. Iesus then wearied in his journey, sat thus on the well. ¶ It was about the sixth hour:

For in that he himself suffered, and was tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

For we have not an high priest, which cannot have compassion on our infirmities: but was in all points tempted, in like manner: but yet without sin.
