And sent unto him their disciples with Herode's servants, saying: Master, we know that thou art true, and that thou teachest the way of God truly, neither carest for any man, for thou considerest not men's estate.

¶ Pilate called together the high priests, and rulers, and the people,

But the pharyses and scribes despised the counsel of God, against themselves, and were not baptised of him.

Nevertheless among the chief rulers many believed on him, but because of the pharises they would not be a known of it, lest they should be excommunicated.

Iesus answered him: I spake openly in the world. I ever taught in the synagogue and in the temple whither all the jewes resorted: and in secret have I said nothing:

¶ There was a man of the pharises named Nicodemus a ruler among the jewes.

Come see a man which told me all things that ever I did. Is not he Christ?

¶ Then said some of them of Ierusalem: Is not this he whom they go about to kill?

Many of the people believed on him, and said: When Christ cometh: Will he do more miracles than this man hath done?

Doth any of the rulers, or of the pharises believe on him?

Such words spake his father, and mother, because they feared the jewes, for the jewes had conspired already that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be excommunicate out of the Synagogue.

¶ When they saw the boldness of Peter and Ihon, And knew that they were unlearned men and lay people, they marvelled, and they knew them, that they were with Iesu:

In so much that many of the brethren in the Lord are boldened thorow my bonds, and dare more largely speak the word without fear.
