Then, as the High Priests went on heaping accusations on Him,
When however the High Priests and the Elders kept bringing their charges against Him, He said not a word in reply.
So Pilate questioned Him. »Are you the King of the Jews?« he asked. »I am,« replied Jesus.
Pilate again and again asked Him, »Do you make no reply? Listen to the many charges they are bringing against you.«
But Jesus made no further answer: so that Pilate wondered.
Upon receiving this answer, Pilate was for releasing Him. But the Jews kept shouting, »If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar's. Every one who sets himself up as king declares himself a rebel against Caesar.«
