One day –it was a Sabbath– He was taking a meal at the house of one of the Rulers of the Pharisee party, while they were closely watching Him.

Is not a man, however, far superior to a sheep? Therefore it is right to do good on the Sabbath.«

They closely watched Him to see whether He would cure him on the Sabbath–so as to have a charge to bring against Him.

When He had thus spoken, a Pharisee invited Him to breakfast at his house; so He entered and took His place at table.

In front of Him was a man suffering from dropsy.

Being asked by the Pharisees when the Kingdom of God was coming, He answered, »The Kingdom of God does not so come that you can stealthily watch for it.

So, after impatiently watching their opportunity, they sent spies who were to act the part of good and honest men, that they might fasten on some expression of His, so as to hand Him over to the ruling power and the Governor's authority.

The Scribes and the Pharisees were on the watch to see whether He would cure him on the Sabbath that they might be able to bring an accusation against Him.

Now there was one of the Pharisees whose name was Nicodemus–a ruler among the Jews.

But a Pharisee of the name of Gamaliel, a teacher of the Law, held in honour by all the people, rose from his seat and requested that they should be sent outside the court for a few minutes.
