»Which of those three seems to you to have acted like a fellow man to him who fell among the robbers?«

»You are they,« He said to them, »who boast of their own goodness before men, but God sees your hearts; for that which holds a proud position among men is detestable in God's sight.

Ignorant of the righteousness which God provides and building their hopes upon a righteousness of their own, they have refused submission to God's righteousness.

For if he was held to be righteous on the ground of his actions, he has something to boast of; but not in the presence of God.

It is evident, too, that no one can find acceptance with God simply by obeying the Law, because »the righteous shall live by faith,«

You all see that it is because of actions that a man is pronounced righteous, and not simply because of faith.
