They asked this in order to put Him to the test, so that they might have some charge to bring against Him. But Jesus leant forward and began to write with His finger on the ground.

But He answered her not a word. Then the disciples interposed, and begged Him, saying, »Send her away because she keeps crying behind us.«

Here the Pharisees and Sadducees came to Him; and, to make trial of Him, they asked Him to show them a sign in the sky.

Then came some of the Pharisees to Him to put Him to the proof by the question, »Has a man a right to divorce his wife whenever he chooses?«

Perceiving their wickedness, Jesus replied, »Why are you hypocrites trying to ensnare me?

and one of them, an expounder of the Law, asked Him as a test question,

Jesus however remained silent. Again the High Priest addressed Him. »In the name of the ever-living God,« he said, »I now put you on your oath. Tell us whether you are the Christ, the Son of God.«

Presently a party of Pharisees come to Him with the question–seeking to entrap Him, »May a man divorce his wife?«

Shall we pay, or shall we refuse to pay?« But He, knowing their hypocrisy, replied, »Why try to ensnare me? Bring me a shilling for me to look at.«

They closely watched Him to see whether He would cure him on the Sabbath–so as to have a charge to bring against Him.

The Pharisees followed Him and began to dispute with Him, asking Him for a sign in the sky, to make trial of Him.

Then an expounder of the Law stood up to test Him with a question. »Rabbi,« he asked, »what shall I do to inherit the Life of the Ages?«

Others, to put Him to the test, asked Him for a sign in the sky.

At break of day however He returned to the Temple, and there the people came to Him in crowds. He seated Himself;

And do not let us test the Lord too far, as some of them tested Him and were destroyed by the serpents.
