and was teaching them when the Scribes and the Pharisees brought to Him a woman who had been found committing adultery. They made her stand in the centre of the court, and they put the case to Him.

So he assembled all the High Priests and Scribes of the people, and anxiously asked them where the Christ was to be born.

At break of day however He returned to the Temple, and there the people came to Him in crowds. He seated Himself;

»Rabbi,« they said, »this woman has been found in the very act of committing adultery.

They listened to Him, and then, beginning with the eldest, took their departure, one by one, till all were gone. And Jesus was left behind alone–and the woman in the centre of the court.

They brought him to the Pharisees–the man who had been blind.

So they made the Apostles stand in the centre, and demanded of them, »By what power or in what name have you done this?«

This accounts for the fact that if during her husband's life she lives with another man, she will be stigmatized as an adulteress; but that if her husband is dead she is no longer under the old prohibition, and even though she marries again, she is not an adulteress.
