Then said Jesus to the crowds, »Have you come out as if to fight with a robber, with swords and bludgeons to apprehend me? Day after day I have been sitting teaching in the Temple, and you did not arrest me.

When the High Priests had gathered up the money they said, »It is illegal to put it into the Treasury, because it is the price of blood.«

Having taken a seat opposite the Treasury, He observed how the people were dropping money into the Treasury, and that many of the wealthy threw in large sums.

So He called His disciples to Him and said, »In solemn truth I tell you that this widow, poor as she is, has thrown in more than all the other contributors to the Treasury;

At this the Scribes and the High Priests wanted to lay hands on Him, then and there; only they were afraid of the people. For they saw that in this parable He had referred to them.

Looking up He saw the people throwing their gifts into the Treasury–the rich people.

This made them once more try to arrest Him, but He withdrew out of their power.

»Leave the matter in my hands,« He replied; »the time for me to act has not yet come.«

But when the Festival was already half over, Jesus went up to the Temple and commenced teaching.

On hearing this they wanted to arrest Him; yet not a hand was laid on Him, because His time had not yet come.

Some of them wanted at once to arrest Him, but no one laid hands upon Him.

As for you, go up to the Festival. I do not now go up to this Festival, because my time is not yet fully come.«

At break of day however He returned to the Temple, and there the people came to Him in crowds. He seated Himself;

Thereupon they took up stones with which to stone Him, but He hid Himself and went away out of the Temple.
