The next day, having decided to leave Bethany and go into Galilee, Jesus found Philip, and invited him to follow Him.

Now when Jesus heard that John was thrown into prison, He withdrew into Galilee,

»Follow me,« said Jesus, »and leave the dead to bury their own dead.«

Passing on thence Jesus saw a man called Matthew sitting at the Toll Office, and said to him, »Follow me.« And he arose, and followed Him.

For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.«

This conversation took place at Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

The next day John saw Jesus coming towards him and exclaimed, »Look, that is the Lamb of God who is to take away the sin of the world!

Again the next day John was standing with two of his disciples,

The two disciples heard his exclamation, and they followed Jesus.

(Now Philip came from Bethsaida, the same town as Andrew and Peter.)

They came to Philip, of Bethsaida in Galilee, with the request, »Sir, we wish to see Jesus.«

»Master,« said Philip, »cause us to see the Father: that is all we need.«

This, the first of His miracles, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee, and thus displayed His glorious power; and His disciples believed in Him.

And when He looked round and saw an immense crowd coming towards Him, He said to Philip, »Where shall we buy bread for all these people to eat?«

»Seven pounds' worth of bread,« replied Philip, »is not enough for them all to get even a scanty meal.«

I do not say that I have already won the race or have already reached perfection. But I am pressing on, striving to lay hold of the prize for which also Christ has laid hold of me.

We love because God first loved us.
