»What then?« they inquired; »are you Elijah?«»I am not,« he said. »Are you the Prophet?«»No,« he answered.
And (if you are willing to receive it) he is the Elijah who was to come.
»Some say John the Baptist,« they replied; »others Elijah; others Jeremiah or one of the Prophets.«
»This is Jesus, the Prophet, from Nazareth in Galilee,« replied the crowds.
and he will be His forerunner in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn fathers' hearts to the children, and cause the rebellious to walk in the wisdom of the upright, to make a people perfectly ready for the lord.«
So they pressed the question. »Who are you?« they said– »that we may take an answer to those who sent us. What account do you give of yourself?«
Again they questioned him. »Why then do you baptize,« they said, »if you are neither the Christ nor Elijah nor the Prophet?«
Thereupon the people, having seen the miracle He had performed, said, »This is indeed the Prophet who was to come into the world.«
After listening to these discourses, some of the crowd began to say, »This is beyond doubt the Prophet.«
