And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel.

And they buried him in his own sepulchers which he had made for himself in the city of David, and laid him in the bed which was filled with sweet odors and divers kinds of spices prepared by the apothecaries' art: and they made a very great burning for him.

And being in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at table, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard, very precious; and she broke the box, and poured it on his head.

She hath done what she could: she is come beforehand to anoint my body to the burying.

There were also women looking on at a distance, among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger, and of Joses, and Salome;

And now, when the evening was come, (because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath)

And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses, beheld where he was laid.

And very early in the morning, the first day of the week, they came to the sepulcher at the rising of the sun:

And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulcher; for they trembled, and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid.

And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.

And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested on the sabbath, according to the commandment.

Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the sepulcher, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.

Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath, (for that sabbath was a great day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
