But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succored him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David swore to him, saying, Thou shalt go out no more with us to battle, that thou mayest not extinguish the light of Israel.

They fell upon me in the day of my calamity: but the LORD was my support.

For thou art my lamp, O LORD: and the LORD will lighten my darkness.

And to his son will I give one tribe, that David my servant may have a light always before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen for me to put my name there.

Nevertheless, for David's sake the LORD his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, to set up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem:

There will I make the horn of David to bud, I have ordained a lamp for my anointed.

It is he that giveth salvation to kings: who delivereth David his servant from the hurtful sword.

Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, Let me go, I pray thee, and I will slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man shall know it: why should he slay thee, that all the Jews who are gathered to thee should be scattered, and the remnant of Judah perish?

He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.
