Jesus, however, turning to Peter, said: "Out of my way, Satan! You are a hindrance to me; for you look at things, not as God does, but as man does."
But Peter took Jesus aside, and began to rebuke him. "Master," he said, "please God that shall never be your fate!"
Alas for the world because of such snares! There cannot but be snares; yet alas for the man who is answerable for the snare!
Then Jesus said to him: "Begone, Satan! for Scripture says-- 'Thou shalt do homage to the Lord thy God, and worship him only.'"
Jesus, however, turning round and seeing his disciples, rebuked Peter. "Out of my sight, Satan!" he exclaimed. "For you look at things, not as God does, but as man does."
And Jesus answered him: "Scripture says--'Thou shalt do homage to the Lord thy God, and worship him only.'"
"Did not I myself choose you to be the Twelve?" replied Jesus; "and yet, even of you, one is playing the 'Devil's' part."
Let us, then, cease to judge one another. Rather let this be your resolve--never to place a stumbling-block or an obstacle in a Brother's way.
The right course is to abstain from meat or wine or, indeed, anything that is a stumbling-block to your Brother.
The end of such men is Ruin; for their appetites are their God, and they glory in their shame; their minds are given up to earthly things.
Fix your thoughts upon the things that are above, not upon those that are on earth.
