We work hard, toiling with our own hands. We meet abuse with blessings, we meet persecution with endurance,

So, too, the Master has appointed that those who tell the Good News should get their living from the Good News.

I, however, have not availed myself of any of these rights. I am not saying this to secure such an arrangement for myself; indeed, I would far rather die-Nobody shall make my boast a vain one!

What is my reward, then? To present the Good News free of all cost, and so make but a sparing use of the rights which it gives me.

Perhaps you say that I did wrong in humbling myself that you might be exalted--I mean because I told you God's Good News without payment.

And, when I was with you in need, I did not become a burden to any of you; for our Brothers, on coming from Macedonia, supplied my needs. I kept myself, and will keep myself from being an expense to you in any way.

In what respect, I ask, were you treated worse than the other Churches, unless it was that, for my part, I refused to become a burden to you? Forgive me the wrong I thus did you!

You will not have forgotten, Brothers, our labor and toil. Night and day we used to work at our trades, so as not be a burden to any of you, while we proclaimed to you God's Good News.

Make it your ambition to live quietly, and to attend to your own business, and to work with your hands, as we directed you;
