Just when Herod was intending to bring him before the people, on that very night Peter was asleep between two soldiers, chained to them both, while there were sentries in front of the door, guarding the prison.

And, in their terror of him, the men on guard trembled violently and became like dead men.

So Peter was kept in prison, but meanwhile the prayers of the Church were being earnestly offered to God on his behalf.

Then he went up to Paul, arrested him, ordered him to be doubly chained, and proceeded to inquire who he was, and what he had been doing.

This, then, is my reason for urging you to come to see me and talk with me; because it is for the sake of the Hope of Israel that I am here in chains."

While they had found the goal barred securely and the guards posted at the doors, yet, on opening them, they had not found any one inside.

On behalf of which I am an Ambassador--in chains! Pray that, in telling it, I may speak fearlessly as I ought.

May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus; for he often cheered me and was not ashamed of my chains.

Therefore we may say with confidence-- 'The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?'
