For there is a passage of Scripture that runs-- 'See, I am placing in Zion a choice and precious corner-stone; And he who believes in him shall have no cause for shame.'

Have you never read this passage of Scripture?--'The very stone which the builders despised has now itself become the corner- stone;

You have been built up upon the foundation laid by the Apostles and Prophets, Christ Jesus himself being 'the corner- stone.'

Everything that is written under divine inspiration is helpful for teaching, for refuting error, for giving guidance, and for training others in righteousness;

Come to Him, then, as to a living stone, rejected, indeed, by men, but in God's eyes choice and precious;

and 'a stumbling-block, and a rock which shall prove a hindrance.' They stumble because they do not accept the Message. This was the fate destined for them.

But first be assured of this:--There is no prophetic teaching found in Scripture that can be interpreted by man's unaided reason;

It is the same in all his letters, when he speaks in them about these subjects. There are some things in them difficult to understand, which untaught and weak people distort, just as they do all other writings, to their own Ruin.
