Then Abraham took a flock of sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelech, and the two of them made a covenant.

So Abraham got up early in the morning, saddled his donkey and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son. He split wood for the burnt offering, and got up and went to the place about which God had told him.

Jacob said, “Make a pledge to me now.” So he made a pledge to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob.

Now it happened that on that day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well that they dug, and said to him, “We’ve found water.”

So now, come, let’s make a covenant, you and I, and let it be a witness between you and me.”

For people swear by someone greater; and the oath, as confirmation, is an end to all their disputing.

Now the men of Israel were hard-pressed that day, for Saul put the people under oath saying, “Cursed be the man that eats any food before evening, until I have avenged myself on my enemies!” So none of the people tasted food.

Then David swore again saying, “Your father knows very well that I have found favor in your eyes. So he must have thought, ‘Let’s not let Jonathan know about this, else he will be grieved.’ But truly as Adonai lives and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.”

Then David asked him, “Will you lead me to this raiding band?” “Swear to me by God that you won’t kill me or deliver me into my master’s hands,” he said, “and I will lead you to this marauding band.”
