For the wise man, together with the fool, is not remembered forever. For in the days to come both will be forgotten. Alas, the wise, just like the fool, must die!

Then the king chanted a lament for Abner and said, “Should Abner die like a senseless fool?

but when the wind blows over it, it is gone, and its place is no longer known.

Will he live forever— and never see the Pit?

Will Your love be declared in the grave? Or Your faithfulness in the place of ruin?

Then Joseph died, as did all his brothers and all that generation.

Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.

The wisdom of the prudent is to consider his way, but the folly of fools is deception.

There is no remembrance for former things, and things yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow.

A wise man has his eyes in his head, while the fool walks in the darkness. Yet, I also came to realize that the same destiny befalls them both.

Then said I in my heart: “I, even I, will have the same destiny as a fool. So why have I become so wise?” I said in my heart, “This too is meaningless.”

So what advantage has the wise over the fool? What does the pauper gain by knowing how to walk before the living?

Better to go to a house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting, since that is the end of all mankind —and the living should take it to heart.

Then I saw the wicked buried—they used to come and go from the holy place, but will soon be forgotten in the very city where they did this. This too is meaningless.

Now a poor, wise man was found in it, and he delivered the city by his shrewdness. Yet nobody remembered that poor man!

For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing. They have no further reward, even the memory of them is forgotten.

Then those who revere Adonai spoke with each other, and Adonai took notice and heard, and a scroll of remembrance was written before Him, for those who revere Adonai, even those who esteem His Name.

And just as it is appointed for men to die once, and after this judgment,
