The fear of Adonai is clean, enduring forever. The judgments of Adonai are true and altogether righteous.

Will he live forever— and never see the Pit?

Surely he must see, even wise men die. The fool and the brutish will alike perish, leaving their wealth to others.

The wisdom of the prudent is to consider his way, but the folly of fools is deception.

Wisdom is before the person of understanding, but the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth.

For the wise man, together with the fool, is not remembered forever. For in the days to come both will be forgotten. Alas, the wise, just like the fool, must die!

For the destiny of humankind and the destiny of animals are one and the same. As one dies, so dies the other. Both have the same breath—a human has no advantage over an animal—both are fleeting.

Even if the other man were to live a thousand years twice and never enjoy good things—do not all go to the same place?

So what advantage has the wise over the fool? What does the pauper gain by knowing how to walk before the living?

Better to go to a house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting, since that is the end of all mankind —and the living should take it to heart.

Who is like the wise person? Who knows the meaning of a matter? A person’s wisdom makes his face shine, transforming the harshness of his face.

I further observed under the sun: The race is not to the swift nor the battle to the mighty, nor does bread come to the wise, or wealth to the discerning, or favor to the skillful; for time and chance befall them all.

So I said: “Wisdom is better than strength.” But the poor man’s wisdom is despised and his words are not heeded.

But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness. He doesn’t know where he is going, because the darkness has made his eyes blind.
