Adonai has returned on you all the blood of Saul’s house, in whose place you’ve reigned. Adonai has handed the kingdom over to your son Absalom—so see, your own evil has overtaken you, because you are a man of bloodshed.”

Answer me when I call, God of my righteousness! You set me free when I am in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer.

Listen to me and answer me. I am restless in my complaint and moan—

Adonai my God, if I have done this— if there is guilt on my hands,

Like a fluttering sparrow or a flying swallow, so an undeserved curse does not land.

For they have poured out the blood of kedoshim and prophets, and You have given them blood to drink— they are deserving!”

in order that the violence done to Jerubbaal’s 70 sons might come due, so their blood might be laid on their brother Abimelech who slew them, and on the lords of Shechem who strengthened his hands to slay his brothers.
